2026 Australia Day Awards

Celebrating Our 2026 Australia Day Award Recipients

Australia Day provides an opportunity to reflect on what makes our communities strong, resilient and connected - and at the heart of that are the people who quietly and consistently give their time, talent and care to others.

This year the Barcaldine Region was proud to recognise a remarkable group of individuals and organisations through the 2026 Australia Day Awards. Each recipient represents the very best of our region, demonstrating community spirit, leadership and dedication across a wide range of fields.

Citizen of the Year, Daryn Kruse (Muttaburra), was recognised for his unwavering commitment to supporting others. From assisting elderly residents with daily tasks and transport, to volunteering at the local school, driving the social bus and helping deliver essential supplies, Daryn’s contribution is felt right across his community.

The Sportsperson of the Year Award was presented to Jack Campbell (Aramac), whose dedication to restarting the Bush Pigs, sportsmanship and pride in representing his town make him a role model both on and off the field.

We were also delighted to celebrate emerging talent, with the Young Sportsperson Award awarded to Ella Johnson (Alpha), recognising her commitment, determination and sporting achievements at a young age.

Community organisations were also acknowledged for their vital role in bringing people together. The Event of the Year Award was awarded to the Alpha Golf Club (Alpha), while the Cultural Award was presented to the Barcaldine Bowls Club (Barcaldine) for their ongoing contribution to community connection and participation.

The Volunteer Award recognised the invaluable efforts of individuals who selflessly give their time to support others:

  • Kathleen Gleeson – Barcaldine
  • Aloma Everingham – Alpha
  • Sarah Lima – Aramac
  • Melanie Arnold – Muttaburra
  • Leslie Byrnes – Aramac
  • Catharine Bowyer – Alpha

These recipients, along with all those nominated, highlight the depth of care, generosity and pride that exists across our region. We extend our sincere thanks and congratulations to every award recipient for the positive impact they make within their communities. Their contributions remind us that it is people - not places - who truly shape the spirit of the Barcaldine Region.

The 2026 Australia Day celebrations across the region were further enriched by the attendance of our Australia Day Ambassadors, who generously shared their time, stories and inspiration with local communities. We were honoured to welcome Peter Davis, Founder of BloodBikes Australia; Alison Alexander OAM, Brisbane-based food consultant and radio presenter and Jay Larkins, Director of the Brisbane Paralympic Football Program.
