When to put your bin out
Place your bin out the night before your collection day.
Bins should be returned to your property within 24 hours of being emptied.
How to position your bin.
-
Bins must be facing the road, with the handles and wheels towards your house.
-
You can place your bin on the kerb or in your driveway if needed.
-
Please do not put bins behind parked cars and avoid parking in front of bins, as the truck may not be able to reach them.
Space around your bin
-
If you have more than 1 bin, leave 50 centimetres (half a metre) between each bin.
-
Leave at least 1 metre between your bin and obstacles such as trees, fences, poles, parked cars, or mailboxes.
-
This space is needed for the truck’s mechanical arm to safely pick up your bin.
Weight and lid
Items that should not go in your bin
Please do not place the following in any wheelie bin:
-
Large bulky items that stop the lid from closing
-
Excessively heavy materials (for example, large amounts of soil, rocks, concrete, or metal)
- These items can damage the truck or your bin and may mean your bin is not emptied.
Bin condition
-
Bins that are cracked, badly split, or damaged may not be serviced, as they can break during collection.
-
If your bin is damaged, please contact Council to arrange a replacement.
-
Wheelie bins can be purchased from Council for $106. Bins must be paid for prior to delivery. Wheelie bins have a shelf life of approximately 7 years, after this time they will begin to crack, split and become damaged. Damaged wheelie bins may not be serviced and customers will receive a letter in writing to replace their bin.
Care for your wheelie bin
You can extend the life of your bin by storing it out of direct sunlight – in a carport etc, regularly washing the inside of the bin and by not over loading it. Wheelie bins are designed to take approximately six bags of household rubbish, loading the bins with lawn clippings, building off cuts etc, will severely shorten the lifespan of your bin.
Maggots in your bin?
In Queensland’s warm and humid climate, maggots can appear in bins even when the lid is closed. Flies are attracted to food odours, and they can spread disease — but with a few easy steps, you can reduce the chances of maggots in your bin.
Here’s(PDF, 1MB) how to prevent them and keep your bin clean!
