Everything you need to know to manage waste correctly in Barcaldine Regional Council

Running a business in Barcaldine comes with great opportunities — and shared responsibility. Managing waste the right way helps to extend the life of our landfill, cuts costs, and keeps our towns clean and sustainable.

This page gives you all the essential information your business needs to sort, store, reduce, and dispose of waste correctly across the Barcaldine region. Whether you're a small shop, a large enterprise, or anything in between, we’re here to help you make good waste decisions easily and confidently.

Cardboard in our Region

Most of the cardboard generated in Barcaldine Regional comes from commercial sites. While cardboard is recyclable, it can also create serious issues in landfill, including an increased risk of fires. For this reason, separating and managing cardboard properly is really important.

The most effective option is to arrange a cardboard-only collection with a local contractor or the Council’s waste collection contractor. This service is already available in Barcaldine, and we strongly encourage businesses to consider on-site cardboard collection to keep it separate from general waste and out of landfill. Flattening cardboard properly helps optimise bin space and reduce collection costs, making the system more efficient for everyone.

Another option is to take cardboard directly to the Waste Transfer Station, where there are two yellow-lidded 1,100 L bins dedicated to cardboard recycling. This material is then collected and recycled through our local contractor, J. J. Richards.

Whichever option you choose, good preparation makes a big difference. Please ensure that:

  • All boxes are emptied of plastic, wrapping material, and polystyrene

  • Cardboard is clean and flattened before disposal
