Business Waste Collection

Businesses have several options for managing their waste depending on the type and quantity generated.

1) Private Commercial Waste Collection

Businesses producing larger quantities of waste may find a commercial collection service more suitable.

2) Council Commercial 240 L Wheelie Bins

Option 3 – Waste Transfer Station

The Barcaldine Waste Transfer Station accepts a wide range of commercial waste and recyclable materials.

3.1) Correctly Sorted Materials

Businesses are encouraged to separate recyclable and recoverable materials before arriving at the Waste Transfer Station.

Materials that are correctly sorted and placed in the designated areas, in accordance with the on-site signage, will continue to be accepted free of charge, except where charges apply to Commercial Regulated Waste.

Remember!!! 

Cardboard represent more 35% of the General Waste.  We encourage businesses to sort it and ensure that:

• All boxes are emptied of plastic, wrapping material, and polystyrene

• Cardboard is clean and flattened before disposal

3.2) Mixed or Unsorted Loads

Any load that is not sorted in accordance with the site signage will be classified as General Waste.

From the 2027–28 financial year, Council intends to introduce disposal charges for mixed or unsorted commercial waste delivered to the Waste Transfer Station.

This approach supports the user pays principle, encourages recycling and ensures that the cost of managing mixed waste is paid by those who generate it. 

3.3) Waste Transfer Station Improvements

Council is upgrading the Waste Transfer Station to provide:

• Improved recycling facilities
• Better traffic management
• CCTV surveillance
• Controlled site access
• Clear signage
• Staff available during opening hours to assist customers with waste sorting

These improvements will help recover more recyclable materials while reducing waste sent to landfill.

3.4) Business Access Outside Opening Hours

Council is investigating a secure digital gate access system for approved businesses that require regular access outside supervised operating hours.

This service is expected to benefit businesses such as:

• Landscaping contractors
• Garden maintenance businesses
• Building contractors
• Commercial operators with regular waste disposal requirements

Every entry would be electronically recorded and monitored by CCTV.
