Organic waste

Organic waste can be divided into two main categories:

  • Green Waste – garden prunings, grass clippings, leaves, branches, and vegetation generated from gardening and property maintenance.
  • Food Waste – fruit and vegetable scraps, leftovers, coffee grounds, tea bags, and other food-related organic materials.

To improve recovery and recycling, green waste need to be separated into the following categories:

  • Mulch, leaves, grass clippings, and small branches, which can be processed using Council's existing equipment.
  • Large branches and tree trunks, which require separate management.
  • Palm fronds and palm waste, which cannot be processed with normal green waste and must be deposited in a separate area.

Clean soil (clean dirt) should also be delivered separately, as it can be reused for landfill operations and site rehabilitation.

Half of Your Bin Is Compostable

Nearly 50% of household waste is organic material, including food scraps, grass clippings, leaves, and garden prunings.

When organic waste breaks down in landfill, it produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that also contributes to unpleasant odours, particularly during hot weather.

Composting at home helps you:

  • Reduce bad smells in your wheelie bin

  • Reduce waste sent to landfill

  • Lower greenhouse gas emissions

  • Create free, nutrient-rich compost for your garden
