Council Endorses Gordon Street Master Plan to Revitalise Aramac’s Main Street
Barcaldine Regional Council endorsed the Gordon Street Master Plan at its May 2026 Council Meeting, setting a clear and future-focused vision for Aramac’s main street as a vibrant, shaded and welcoming community hub.
The Master Plan provides a long-term framework to guide future investment and decision-making, with a focus on enhancing liveability, supporting local businesses and strengthening Aramac’s unique identity.
Mayor Rob Chandler said the adoption of the Master Plan reflects strong collaboration between Council and the local community.
“This was a significant community shaping project for this Council with our clear commitment to community engagement at the heart. We now have a mandate for what the people of Aramac want to see in Gordon Street.” Mayor Chandler said.
At its core, the Master Plan envisions Gordon Street as “the safe, shaded and accessible heart of the Aramac community”, where residents and visitors can gather, linger and enjoy the town’s character and heritage.
Key features of the plan include:
-
New 2.5-metre-wide footpaths along the length of the street to improve accessibility and safety
-
Increased tree planting and shade structures to combat heat and improve comfort
-
Creation of pedestrian priority zones and raised crossings in key areas
-
Enhanced public spaces and event areas, including opportunities for outdoor dining and community activities
-
Improved lighting, signage and wayfinding to support tourism and local businesses
-
Integration of public art, storytelling and digital technologies to celebrate Aramac’s rich history
The plan directly responds to community feedback, which highlighted the need for more shade, improved infrastructure, and a more inviting and visually appealing streetscape.
Importantly, the Master Plan retains the wide character of Gordon Street, ensuring it continues to function as both a main street and a key event space for the town.
Council Chief Executive Officer Daniel Bradford said the Master Plan will help guide staged improvements over time as funding becomes available.
“This plan gives Council a strong, community-backed direction for future investment in Aramac’s main street. It ensures that as we deliver projects over time, we are doing so in a way that reflects local priorities while creating a more comfortable, accessible and vibrant space for residents, businesses and visitors,” Mr. Bradford said.
The plan identifies priority works including road resurfacing and new footpaths as immediate focus areas, alongside opportunities to secure external funding for larger projects.
With an estimated total project value of approximately $5.5 million for future projects, the Master Plan positions Gordon Street as a catalyst for economic growth, tourism and community wellbeing.
Council acknowledges the important role of the Gordon Street stakeholder group and Wall Planning in shaping the Master Plan, with extensive community and stakeholder engagement ensuring the final vision reflects the ideas and priorities of the Aramac community.
Council will now begin progressing detailed design, funding opportunities and staged implementation of priority projects.
